Joella Bitter is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology in the Humanities Department at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester. Her research focuses on the anthropologies of sound and city-making in Uganda, intersecting with feminist praxis, experimental ethnography, and digital humanities. She holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from Duke University, complemented by a Graduate Certificate in Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies.
Research Interests:
- Soundscapes and urban transformation in Ugandan contexts
- Intersection of feminist theory and creative methodologies
- Afrodiasporic geographies and environmental justice
- Multimodal ethnographic practices
Her work has been supported by prestigious grants including the Wenner-Gren Foundation, National Science Foundation, and American Council of Learned Societies. She affiliates with Musicology at Eastman and emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration through her teaching and creative projects.
