Joel Shapiro is a Professor of Financial Economics at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. He holds a PhD in Economics from Princeton University and previously served as a tenured associate professor at Universitat Pompeu Fabra. His research focuses on financial regulation, corporate governance, and executive compensation, with notable contributions to understanding credit ratings, banking regulation, and LIBOR mechanisms.
Shapiro teaches Business Finance to MBA and EMBA students, emphasizing practical applications and case studies. He directs the Oxford Executive Finance Programme, designed to demystify financial decision-making at an executive level. He serves as Area Head of the FAME group and is a research affiliate of the Centre for Economic Policy Research.
His work has been cited by major regulators including the SEC, Federal Reserve, and ECB. Key research themes include ESG investing, conflicts of interest in retail finance, and the governance of financial institutions. Shapiro’s publications appear in top journals like the Journal of Finance and Review of Financial Studies.
Shapiro has advised regulatory bodies globally and co-organizes the Oxford Financial Intermediation Theory Conference (OxFIT). He currently supervises doctoral student Ken Deng and has mentored several prominent researchers in finance and economics.
