Joseph Shapiro

Joseph Shapiro is an Associate Professor of Agricultural & Resource Economics and Economics at UC Berkeley. His research examines environmental policy, international trade, and energy markets, with recent focus on electric vehicle incentives and peak-load energy management.

Shapiro's work quantifies how trade policies affect pollution patterns and develops market-based solutions for energy conservation. His analyses of 'Buy American' provisions and direct load control contracts inform climate and energy legislation.

A Sloan Fellow and Marshall Scholar, Shapiro serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Political Economy and has advised EPA and state agencies on environmental regulation design.
