Jeffrey K. MacKie-Mason is a retired academic and antitrust economist with extensive roles in higher education leadership. He served as University Librarian and Chief Digital Scholarship Officer at UC Berkeley (2015-2024) and Dean of the School of Information at the University of Michigan (2010-2015). He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from MIT (1986), an MPP from the University of Michigan (1982), and an A.B. in Environmental Policy from Dartmouth (1980). His research bridges economics, computer science, and psychology, focusing on information systems design, competition policy, and incentive-centered mechanisms.
His career includes academic leadership roles such as Arthur W. Burks Collegiate Professor at Michigan and dual professorships in UC Berkeley's School of Information and Department of Economics. He has advised over 40 antitrust cases, specializing in technology industries and digital markets. Awards include the UC Berkeley Chancellor's Distinguished Service Award (2024) and the Sloan Fellowship (1985-86).
Research interests emphasize human information behavior, digital content economics, and antitrust policy. He pioneered work on incentive mechanisms for cybersecurity, peer-to-peer networks, and online privacy. His consulting firm, ApplEcon LLC, has advised major tech firms and governments on competition and regulatory issues.
Major grants include NSF funding for socio-technical infrastructure (STIET) and incentive-centered design projects. He led initiatives like the PEAK experiment on digital library pricing and co-authored influential works on internet economics and market-based resource allocation.
