Joe Newman

Joe Newman is a Lecturer in the Department of Music at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he serves as module convenor for Practical Popular Music Studies and Performance: Ensemble while teaching across the BMus Popular Music degree. He additionally represents the department as a University and College Union (UCU) staff representative.

Having graduated from Goldsmiths in 2011, Newman maintains an active dual career in academia and professional performance. His research interests center on Popular Music practice, Music Performance techniques, Songwriting, and Guitar Performance, directly informed by extensive industry experience. This integration of scholarly and practical expertise shapes his pedagogical approach in modules like Song Form & Practice and Performance: New Contexts.

As a performer, Newman has toured globally with Mercury Prize-nominated artists including Jessie Ware and Ghostpoet, appearing on major television programs such as The Tonight Show and Late Night with Seth Meyers. His recording credits span prestigious studios like Abbey Road and Real World, notably contributing to Ghostpoet's Mercury Prize-nominated album 'Shedding Skin' and Fabiana Palladino's singles 'Shimmer' and 'Waiting'.

Within the department, Newman supervises student projects including Creative Research Project and Popular Music Project. His professional achievements in the music industry—evidenced by collaborations with Tom Jones, Miguel, and Bilal—provide tangible context for academic instruction, bridging theoretical study with contemporary music industry practices.
