Simon Deacon is a Professor and Convenor of MMus and MFA Creative Practice in the Department of Music at Goldsmiths, University of London, and currently joint Head of Department. He has been a permanent faculty member since 2008, contributing to the development of performance culture and founding NX Records, a professional record label in collaboration with Matthew Herbert. His academic background includes undergraduate degrees in Theatre (Rose Bruford College) and Music (Goldsmiths), and a Master of Music in Jazz Composition from The Manhattan School of Music as a Fulbright Scholar.
His research and professional activities focus on interdisciplinary music practices, including collaborations with artists such as Jessie Ware, Ghostpoet, and Nigel Goodrich. He directs initiatives like the Goldsmiths Music Collective and oversees events at venues like the Royal Festival Hall and Barbican. His work spans performance, composition, sound design, and music production across theatre, jazz, and popular music.
Notable projects include collaborations with the Royal Shakespeare Company, National Theatre, and the Manchester International Festival. He has also led educational outreach through initiatives like the PureGold music festival and Next Generation, funded by the National Theatre.
