Joe Lewis is a Professor at Hamline University, teaching courses such as Schools and Society, Teaching English in the Middle and High School, and Teaching Literacy in the Middle and High School. He holds a doctorate in English Education from Columbia University Teacher’s College, with a focus on cross-cultural language and literacy practices. Research and Professional Focus
Joe’s scholarship centers on equitable education and dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline. His work explores how English teachers can foster critical literacy, address systemic inequities, and advocate for marginalized students. He emphasizes cross-cultural approaches to language and literacy practices, particularly in the context of race, class, culture, and gender. His teaching philosophy prioritizes creating collaborative learning communities that challenge students to think beyond their experiences and adopt advocacy roles.
He has published in journals like The Urban Review, Multicultural Education, and The National Youth-at-Risk Journal, as well as in books including Six Lenses for Anti-Oppressive Education, From Education to Incarceration: Dismantling the School-to-Prison Pipeline, and Practical Strategies to Reduce Childhood Trauma and Mitigate Exposure to the School-to-Prison Pipeline.
International Engagement
Joe has worked as an educational consultant in Morocco and Tanzania, promoting learner-centered pedagogy and expanding girls’ access to education. He frequently collaborates with teachers and students at the Namnyaki Secondary School for Maasai Girls in Tanzania’s Iringa region.
