Joe Hewa is the Director of the Center for Transformational Learning and Leadership and a Scholarly Associate Professor in the Department of Human Development at Washington State University (WSU). He holds a PhD in Communication (2019), an MA in Organizational Leadership (2007), and a BA in Religion (2002). His professional roles include academic leadership, teaching, and community engagement across multiple institutions.

His research focuses on leadership and communication, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and community-based participatory research. Recent work highlights include workshops on growth mindset, resilience, and online teaching strategies during the pandemic, reflecting his commitment to transformative educational practices. He has also pioneered the use of liberating structures in academic and organizational settings to foster collaborative problem-solving.
As Internship Director, Hewa oversees professional preparation programs, ensuring students gain real-world experience. His grants and advising efforts focus on student success and faculty development through initiatives like the LIFT (Listen. Inspire. Foster. Transform.) program.
Hewa leads the Center for Transformational Learning and Leadership, a hub for pedagogical innovation and institutional change at WSU. His interdisciplinary approach integrates communication theory, community engagement, and leadership development to address societal challenges.
