Joe Chapa is a Lecturer in General Engineering at Clemson University's College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences. With a Ph.D. in Imaging Science and advanced degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics, he specializes in foundational engineering education and interdisciplinary research.
- Ph.D. Imaging Science, Rochester Institute of Technology (1995)
- M.S. Electrical Engineering (Optics & Imaging), Stanford University (1986)
- B.E.E. Electrical Engineering, Auburn University (1983)
- B.S. Mathematics, Illinois College (1981)
His research bridges engineering education with signal processing, missile defense systems, and computational modeling. Earlier work focused on wavelet algorithms for signal optimization and sensor fusion applications in defense technologies.
Key contributions include a patented missile threat elimination system (2014) and foundational signal processing research (2000). His publications reflect expertise in waveform design, decision support systems, and mathematical modeling.
- 2015 Raytheon President’s Award for Operational Analysis Leadership
- 2013 Raytheon STAR Award from Society of Professional Hispanic Engineers
- 2012 Raytheon Innovation Excellence Award
- 2000 O’Neill Program Manager of the Year
- 1995 RIT Outstanding Graduate Scholar
Chapa teaches core engineering courses including ENGR 1010 (Mathematical Topics), ENGR 1100 (Success Skills), and ENGR 1410 (Programming). He previously held leadership roles at MIT Lincoln Laboratory and Raytheon, and has been involved with ASEE (American Society of Engineering Education).
