Bonnie Joe

Bonnie N. Joe, MD, PhD, is a Professor and Chief of Breast Imaging in the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She holds the Edward A. Sickles Professorship and serves as Medical Director of the Breast Imaging Program. Her research focuses on advancing imaging-based approaches for breast cancer diagnosis, detection, and treatment response assessment, particularly using MRI and PET techniques. Dr. Joe completed her PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering/Biomedical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University (1995), followed by an MD from the University of Pittsburgh (1997). She trained in Diagnostic Radiology at Washington University in St. Louis and completed fellowships in MRI and Breast Imaging at UCSF.

Her recent work emphasizes optimizing screening strategies using MRI and digital mammography, as well as leveraging AI to enhance diagnostic accuracy and patient experience. She has served as Principal Investigator on grants related to breast imaging innovations and co-led the I-SPY 2 trial evaluating MRI-driven personalized neoadjuvant therapy.
