Jessica Hayward

Jessica Hayward, MD, is an Associate Professor of Clinical Radiology in the Breast Imaging section at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She holds roles as Director of the Breast Imaging Fellowship Program and Co-Chair of the Residency Selection Committee. Her academic affiliation includes the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging within UCSF's School of Medicine. Dr. Hayward completed her medical training at Dartmouth School of Medicine (2008), followed by an internal medicine internship at Lenox Hill Hospital (2009), diagnostic radiology residency at Weill Cornell Medical Center, and a Women’s Imaging fellowship at UCSF. Her career milestones include joining UCSF as an Assistant Professor in 2014 and advancing to her current position.

Her research focuses on breast imaging, with an emphasis on breast cancer screening, diagnostic mammography, ultrasound, MRI, and obstetrics/gynecology imaging. Notable contributions include studies on neoadjuvant therapy response assessment, MRI protocols in pregnancy, and transgender breast imaging. She is an active member of professional societies such as the Society of Breast Imaging and American Roentgen Ray Society.

Dr. Hayward’s publications span advancements in imaging techniques, therapeutic approaches, and patient outcomes. Her work highlights innovations like deep learning in MRI simulation and abbreviated MRI protocols. Awards include the Siemens-AUR Radiology Resident Academic Development Program (2011) and recognition from the Alliance of Medical School Educators in Radiology (2008).

In clinical and academic leadership, she emphasizes improving healthcare access and quality, particularly in underserved populations. She collaborates with colleagues on grants and research initiatives, contributing to UCSF’s mission in advancing health equity through imaging excellence.
