Xiaoyan Han serves as Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Wayne State University, recognized globally for pioneering contributions to infrared imaging and nondestructive evaluation methodologies that transformed materials inspection standards.
Her research revolutionized acoustic thermography through discoveries of acoustic chaos phenomena and nonlinear wave coupling in materials, enabling five-to-ten-fold accuracy improvements in material loss measurement. This breakthrough eliminated repeat aircraft fuselage inspections after Boeing designated her IR imaging procedure as the approved standard, with her work featured in 'Science and Innovation' on research.gov.
Professor Han's accolades include:
- Department of Defense Technical Cooperation Program (TTCP) Achievement Award presented at the Pentagon Hall of Heroes
- Airlines for America - Federal Aviation Administration (A4A-FAA) Better Way Award for advancing national aviation safety
She has secured over $11 million in research funding, recently obtaining competitive SBIR Phase I and II awards from the Missile Defense Agency to commercialize her portable thermosonic imaging system for rapid full-field testing of advanced materials, while maintaining active teaching of core electrical engineering courses.
