Jodie Ackland is a Research Fellow in Pulmonary Immunology at the University of Southampton. She works with Professors Karl Staples and Tom Wilkinson investigating inflammatory pathways in chronic respiratory diseases like asthma and COPD. Her research combines experimental infection models with bioinformatics to study host-pathogen interactions in the airway.
Education: BSc Biology (Aberystwyth University, 2011–2014), MSc Biomedical Science (Cardiff Metropolitan University, 2014–2016), PhD Biomedical Science (University of Southampton, 2016–2021). Awards include the Asthma + Lung UK Early Career Starter Award (2024–2026) and multiple BALR Travel Awards. She currently supervises PhD student Lee Kevin Page.
Research focuses on how infections and therapeutics modulate inflammation in chronic respiratory diseases. Active projects include investigating NTHi-induced DNA methylation changes in asthma (funded by Wessex Medical Research) and transcriptomic changes in severe asthmatic airways (funded by Aair Charity).
