Karl Staples

Professor Karl Staples is a leading academic in Respiratory Immunology & Pharmacology at the University of Southampton's Faculty of Medicine. He serves as Deputy Head of Clinical & Experimental Sciences (Knowledge Exchange & Enterprise) and former NIHR Southampton BRC Academic Career Development Lead. His research focuses on host-pathogen interactions in chronic respiratory diseases like asthma and COPD, utilizing ex vivo models to study bacterial and viral infections. Key contributions include identifying defective macrophage control in COPD exacerbations and the role of MAIT cells in NTHi infections. He leads major studies like AERIS, linking NTHi carriage to COPD exacerbations, and contributed to vaccine target discovery via immunoproteomics.

Teaching roles include Pharmacology instruction for medical students and supervision of 14 PhD completions, with current oversight of 4 students.
