Dr. Jodi Yelinek is a Teaching-Focused Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Michigan State University (MSU), joining the faculty in 2019. Her academic journey includes a B.A. (1990) and M.A. (1995) in Sociology from Oakland University and Wayne State University, respectively, followed by a Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from MSU (2016). Previously, she worked as a licensed therapist in Oakland and Genesee Counties, applying clinical experience to her teaching.
Her research focuses on family resilience, cultural influences on family dynamics, blame perception, and protective factors. Notably, she explores how job loss impacts family resilience and integrates her multicultural background (Ojibwe, Finnish, Russian heritage) into her work. Dr. Yelinek teaches courses such as Society and Mental Health (SOC 350), Cross-Cultural Communication (ISS 210), and Lifespan Human Development Across Cultures (ISS 318), emphasizing student engagement and seminar-style learning.
Her recent scholarly contributions include guides for parenting and family skills, ethnicity and social class analysis, and family theory. Though no formal awards are listed, her work bridges sociology with mental health and cross-cultural perspectives. She advises students through her teaching and maintains an active presence in 429 Berkey Hall.
