Professor Joanne Knight holds the Chair in Applied Data Science at Lancaster Medical School, part of the Faculty of Health and Medicine at Lancaster University. Her work focuses on leveraging data science to address complex healthcare challenges, with affiliations to research groups such as CHICAS, DSI-Health, and the FHM Mental Health Theme. She has led multiple collaborative projects, including the Lancaster and South Cumbria Secure Data Environment (LSC-SDE) and studies on the genetic basis of nicotine metabolism and its implications for smoking cessation therapies.
Her research interests span genetics, public health, precision medicine, and healthcare informatics. Notably, she investigates gender-specific genetic factors influencing tobacco use and explores pandemic-related impacts on care home populations through qualitative methods. She also applies data-driven approaches to improve diagnostic practices in chronic respiratory diseases, emphasizing the utility of routinely collected healthcare data.
Professor Knight advises four PhD students: Quin Davies, Kristina Krieger, Rui Li, and Hayley Lowther-Payne, whose research aligns with themes in biomedical informatics and healthcare systems. Her grants include projects on alcohol-associated multimorbidity, mental health correlations in migraine, and the evaluation of recovery initiatives like ‘The Bay’ blueprint. She has contributed to national efforts such as the NIHR Research Support Service and the Better Care Partnership, aiming to enhance healthcare delivery and outcomes.
