Professor Fiona Lobban is a leading academic in mental health research at Lancaster University's Health Research Department within the Faculty of Health and Medicine. Her work focuses on understanding mental health support mechanisms across clinical, online, and peer-to-peer settings, with particular emphasis on digital mental health innovations, social networks' roles in wellbeing, and peer support efficacy. She currently supervises PhD students in digital mental health, social networks, and peer support systems.
Her research methodologies integrate quantitative and qualitative approaches, increasingly adopting realist frameworks. Notable projects include evaluating online mental health communities, developing bipolar parenting interventions, and studying compulsory detention pathways in mental health systems. She leads the FHM Mental Health Theme and is an Institute for Social Futures Fellow.
Recent grants include studies on dental access barriers for individuals with severe mental illness (2022-2024) and a digital bipolar parenting intervention (2022-2027). She has received the 'Outstanding contribution to public and patient involvement award' for her engagement initiatives. Current PhD advisees include David Dinham, Catherine Liberty, and Hayley Lowther-Payne.
Professor Lobban collaborates with NHS trusts and international organizations, contributing to policy reforms through advisory roles like the NHS England Adult Mental Health Programme. Her work bridges clinical practice, digital innovation, and social science to address systemic mental health challenges.
