Joanne Davila is a Distinguished Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Clinical Psychology at Stony Brook University. She holds a PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles (1993). Her research focuses on romantic competence, bisexual+ identity and well-being, LGBTQ+ mental health, and relationship functioning. Key projects include developing relationship education interventions and examining minority stress in sexual minority populations.
Dr. Davila’s work emphasizes translating research into practical tools, such as her book The Thinking Girl's Guide to the Right Guy (2016), and her contributions to understanding relationship dynamics in diverse populations. She leads the Relationship Development Center, a research lab studying intimate relationships. Her publications span peer-reviewed journals like Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology and Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity.
Her research highlights the interplay between mental health and relationship quality, with recent studies exploring stress in clinical trainees, non-monogamous relationships, and the impact of visibility on bisexual+ well-being.
