Heather Armstrong

Dr. Heather Armstrong is a Lecturer in Sexual Health at the University of Southampton's School of Psychology. Her work focuses primarily on the sexual well-being of people with diverse sexualities including various sexual orientations, behaviors, and relationship types. She is actively involved in research, teaching, and editorial work within the field of sexual health.

Her research examines sexual health across diverse populations, with particular attention to non-binary and transgender individuals, gay and bisexual men, and cross-cultural comparisons between the UK and China. She employs both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to explore the complex interplay between sexual identity, mental health, relationship dynamics, and healthcare access.

Dr. Armstrong serves on the editorial boards of several prominent journals including the Journal of Sex Research, Archives of Sexual Behavior, and Sexual Health. Her recent publications demonstrate a strong trajectory of impactful research addressing critical gaps in knowledge about diverse sexual experiences and healthcare needs.

As a dedicated educator, Dr. Armstrong is the module lead for PSYC 3071/6144: Human Sexual Diversity. She supervises multiple PhD students working on diverse aspects of sexual health research, including Charlotte Louise Connolly (DClin), Daniel Alfie Griffiths (PhD Psychology), Selma Marisa Vieira (D.Ed. Psychology), Shijun Zheng (PhD Psychology), Fraedan Mastrantonio (PhD Psychology), Yishu Li (PhD Psychology), and Qidi Zhou (PhD Psychology).

Dr. Armstrong is a member of the Centre for Clinical and Community Applications of Health Psychology and the Institute for Life Sciences at the University of Southampton, where she collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to advance understanding of sexual health across diverse populations.
