Joanne Cairns is a Research Fellow at the Hull York Medical School (University of Hull), based in the Academy of Primary Care. Her current work focuses on the TRANSFORM project funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research, examining inequalities in cancer screening uptake in Yorkshire. Previously, she held roles including Lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University (2017-2019), Senior Research Officer at Alcohol Research UK (2016-2017), and Post-Doctoral Research Associate at Durham University (2012-2016). She earned a PhD from Durham University in 2012 with a thesis on health and resilience.
Her research interests include cancer screening disparities, early cancer detection, and social capital. Key projects include risk-stratified bowel screening strategies and interventions targeting cervical screening among immigrant populations. She has secured grants totaling over £800,000 from funders like Cancer Research UK and Yorkshire Cancer Research. Notable outputs include systematic reviews on screening interventions and policy impacts.
Her work emphasizes public involvement, such as co-creating a comic book to enhance bowel screening awareness. She collaborates with interdisciplinary teams and contributes to policy-relevant research addressing healthcare inequities.
