Joanna Naxton serves as an Academic Tutor at the University of Sunderland, teaching psychology and counselling modules while supervising dissertation projects. She maintains dual professional roles as both an academic and practicing therapist, and is a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
Her research centers on self-injury practices, body image issues, and bereavement through qualitative methodologies. Currently pursuing her PhD at the University of Lancashire, she examines therapists' emotional reactions to clients who self-injure using autoethnographic approaches. She also conducts a Duoethnographic project analyzing body image issues between counselling researchers, with additional expertise in Sand-Play Therapy and therapeutic approaches for children and young people.
As a practicing therapist, Naxton works with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, self-harm, and body image concerns across both charitable sector and private practice settings. Her clinical background informs her academic teaching, creating an integrative approach to therapeutic education.
