Joanna Beachy, MD, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and currently serves as Chief of Newborn Medicine at Baystate Children’s Hospital in Springfield, MA since 2020. She holds leadership roles in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) across multiple institutions, including director positions at Madigan Army Medical Center, Oakwood Hospital, University of Utah/Primary Children’s Medical Center, and Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Her career includes residency and fellowship training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, with medical education spanning Brown University and George Washington University Medical School.

Research Interests: Focuses on neonatal brain health and developmental outcomes, including:

- Predictive factors for neurodevelopmental outcomes in hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy
- Retinopathy of prematurity prevention and ophthalmologic examination tolerance
- SARS-CoV-2 impacts on mother-fetus dyads
Actively involved in ethics and developmental care committees, NIDCAP certified, and engaged in multiple funded/unfunded research studies.
