Dr. Janine Yasmin Khan serves as Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Neonatology) at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine and Attending Neonatologist at Ann & Robert H Lurie Children’s Hospital and Prentice Women’s Hospital. Her clinical expertise centers on high-risk infants with perinatal brain injuries, including neonatal encephalopathy, stroke, and intraventricular hemorrhage.
Her educational journey includes:
- MD from University of the West Indies (1985)
- Internship in General Pediatrics/Adult Medicine at Port of Spain General Hospital (1988)
- Residency in UK (Royal Victoria Infirmary/Newcastle, University of Leicester; 1991)
- Neonatology Fellowship (Birmingham Heartland Hospital NHS Trust; 1994)
- Advanced Cardiology/ECMO Fellowship (Glenfield General Hospital; 1995)
- US Residency (UPMC Mercy Hospital; 1998) and Neonatology Fellowship (UPMC Magee; 1999)
Dr. Khan's research integrates three critical domains: neuroprotection for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and intraventricular hemorrhage, acute renal failure sequelae in NICU infants, and global health initiatives targeting disparities in low/middle-income countries. She actively investigates neonatal opioid withdrawal trends and racial inequities in US neonatal care, leveraging clinical trials and health systems research to translate findings into practice.
Her recent publications demonstrate methodological diversity across clinical pharmacology, health disparities, global implementation science, and birth practice innovation. This body of work reveals consistent focus on vulnerable newborn populations through domestic and international lenses, with strong emphasis on practical interventions for high-mortality conditions.
Key recognitions include:
- Feinberg School of Medicine Outstanding Educator Award (2019)
- James Sutherland Award from Midwest Society for Pediatric Research (2001)
As Principal Investigator for landmark trials (CoolCap, PENUT), Dr. Khan secures substantial NIH funding while serving on the PENUT Steering Committee and as Site-PI for ongoing NIH submissions. Her advisory roles span Dompe Pharmaceutical, Illinois Department of Public Health Newborn Screening, and global editorial boards, reflecting translational impact from bench to policy.
She co-directs the Neonatal Neurocritical Care (NeuroNICU) Program and maintains active affiliations with Northwestern's Institute for Global Health, Stanley Manne Children's Research Institute, and Simpson Querrey Institute for Epigenetics, driving multidisciplinary approaches to neonatal brain injury and health equity.
