Joan Rocklin is a Clinical Professor at the University of Oregon School of Law, specializing in Legal Research and Writing. She earned her J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law Review (Order of the Coif) and an undergraduate degree from Williams College. Her career includes clerkships with Senior Judge William W. Schwarzer and litigation work at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison in New York.
At Oregon Law, she teaches foundational courses like Legal Research and Writing I/II, upper-level classes in Intensive Writing and Bar Exam Preparation, and has significantly impacted legal education through her co-authored textbooks A Lawyer Writes and An Advocate Persuades. Her work focuses on developing analytical and writing skills critical for legal practice.
Professor Rocklin plays a leading role in national legal writing organizations, including the Legal Writing Institute (served on board/treasurer, led Critiquing Workshops) and AALS Section on Legal Writing.
