Joan Kaufman is a Lecturer on Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Senior Director for Academic Programs for the Schwarzman Scholars Program. Previously, she served as director of Columbia University’s Global Center for East Asia, founder/director of the AIDS Public Policy Program at Harvard’s Kennedy School, and held positions at Brandeis University. Her international experience includes roles as UNFPA program officer in China and Ford Foundation’s reproductive health program officer for China.
Education includes:
- D.S. from Harvard School of Public Health
- M.A. in Asian Studies and M.S. in Health/Medical Sciences from UC Berkeley
- B.A. cum laude in Chinese Studies from Trinity College
Research focuses on multi-sectoral health governance, China-centered policy analysis, and intersections of gender with disease response. Work spans HIV/AIDS, reproductive rights, and civil society engagement in health systems.
