Toan Ha, MD, DrPH is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health. He also serves as a public health physician and data evaluation director for the MidAtlantic AIDS Education & Training Center (MAAETC), which provides HIV/AIDS education and resources across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, and Washington D.C.
Dr. Ha possesses extensive international experience in public health with over 15 years working in sexual and reproductive health and HIV/STIs. His educational background includes a Doctor of Medicine from Tay Nguyen University (Vietnam), a Master of International Health from Copenhagen University, and a Doctor of Public Health from The University of Texas at Houston. He completed postdoctoral fellowships at both Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Connecticut.
Dr. Ha's research focuses on social and behavioral aspects of HIV/AIDS, stigma, ART adherence and sexually risky behaviors among vulnerable populations including people living with HIV, men who have sex with men (MSM), young people, and young migrants. His current research includes an NIH/NIMH-funded R21 study assessing HIV prevalence and multiple risk factors among young migrant female workers in Vietnam's industrial zones. Previously, he worked on an intervention study examining alcohol use's impact on ART adherence among men living with HIV in India and conducted research on HIV/AIDS and sexual concurrency among MSM in China.
His scholarly output demonstrates a consistent focus on HIV/AIDS epidemiology, mental health comorbidities, stigma, and behavioral interventions across multiple countries including Vietnam, India, Nepal, and Malaysia. The research spans diverse methodologies from randomized controlled trials to cross-sectional surveys, with a particular emphasis on vulnerable populations and the intersection of social determinants with health outcomes.
Dr. Ha teaches several courses including PUBHLT 0460 on Historic and Contemporary Societal Impacts of Infectious Diseases, IDM 2038 on Global Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control, and IDM 2034 on Control and Prevention of HIV/AIDS. His prior teaching experience includes Global Health Promotion and Intervention at UConn Health School of Medicine.
With significant experience working with international organizations including UNFPA and UNICEF in Vietnam, Dr. Ha brings a global perspective to his research, teaching, and practice in public health, with demonstrated expertise across multiple continents including the United States, India, China, and Vietnam.
