Joan Clifford is an Associate Professor of the Practice of Romance Studies and Director of Duke Service Learning at Duke University. She is affiliated with the Duke Global Health Institute and focuses on integrating community-based learning with language education and global health initiatives. Her work emphasizes service-learning pedagogy, intercultural competence, and the intersection of education with social justice. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia (1998), an M.A. from UNC Chapel Hill (1992), and a B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis (1989).
Her research explores transformative practices in language education through community partnerships, particularly addressing Latino/a communities in Durham. Recent projects include pandemic-era virtual tutoring for the Hispanic community and curricular frameworks for service-learning in global health contexts. She has received grants from Duke’s Office of Instructional Technology, the Thompson Writing Program, and the Program in Latino/a Studies in the Global South.
Clifford’s awards reflect her leadership in service-learning innovation, including the 2014 Dean’s Leadership Award for Spanish civic engagement initiatives and the 2012 Betsy Alden Outstanding Service-Learning Award. She co-founded initiatives like Collaboration X-Change to strengthen campus-community ties and has published widely on community-based language learning and educational equity.
Her courses integrate Duke’s curriculum with community engagement, such as SPANISH 308S: Latinx Voices in Duke, Durham, and Beyond, and LSGS 306-1: Health, Culture, and the Latino Community. She has collaborated with DukeEngage and the Global Education Office to expand study abroad programs and service-learning placements.
