Joan Busquets is the Martin Bucksbaum Professor in Practice of Urban Planning and Design at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design (GSD). Previously, he served as Chair-Professor of Town Planning and Urban Design at the Polytechnic University of Barcelona (1979–2002). His career includes leadership roles such as Head of Urban Planning for Barcelona City Council (1983–1989), overseeing the New Downtowns program and Olympic preparations (1992). He holds a PhD in Urban Studies from the Polytechnic University of Barcelona (1975).
His research focuses on urban grids, city design strategies, and the impact of major events like expos. Notable works include Urban Grids: Handbook for Regular City Design (2019) and Cities X Lines (2007). He has advised on projects in cities like Singapore, Lisbon, and Marseille, emphasizing public-private partnerships and sustainable urbanism.
Key awards include the Erasmus Prize (2011), Grand Prix Spécial de l’Urbanisme (2012), and the Patrick Abercrombie Prize (2021). His professional practice through firms BAU and BLAU has executed projects across Europe, Latin America, and China.
