Dr Joachim Froese is an Honorary Lecturer in the School of Communication and Arts at the University of Queensland, within the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. He holds a PhD (Art) from RMIT University (2017) and has taught at Griffith University, Queensland University of Technology, and the University of the Sunshine Coast since 2007. His work bridges art practice and theory, focusing on photography's role in mediating human-environment relationships.
Education: Associate Diploma in Printmedia (1994, University of Tasmania), Bachelor of Fine Arts (1996, University of Tasmania), Master of Visual Arts (2002, Griffith University), and PhD (2017, RMIT University).
Research interests center on photography’s philosophical and ecological dimensions, including Jakob von Uexküll’s Umwelten theory, human categorizations of nature, and the cultural implications of photographic representation. His artworks are held in major collections like the National Gallery of Australia and Queensland Art Gallery.
Publications include a 2019 journal article on photography and environmental philosophy, a 2017 doctoral thesis on human-nature boundaries, and a 2011 curated collection of his photographic works.
Dr Froese has conducted postgraduate seminars in Germany at Technical University Darmstadt (Architecture Department) and Justus-Liebig University Giessen (Sociology Department). He remains available for research supervision and is an active participant in international art exhibitions.
