Jo Westbrook is a Professor of International Education & Pedagogy and Co-Director of the Centre for International Education at the University of Sussex. With expertise in critical and inclusive curricula, multilingual education, and teacher training, her research spans post-conflict contexts in the Global South and equity-focused pedagogy in the UK.
- Current PI of IRDC/FIT-ED funded project on equitable teacher professional development in Rwanda
- Leader in systematic literature reviews and mixed-methods research on teacher education
- Developer of the 'Faster Read' methodology for adolescent struggling readers
Research interests: Reading comprehension in multilingual classrooms, inclusive pedagogy, accelerated learning, and teacher education policy. Her work emphasizes participatory methods and cross-cultural adaptation, particularly in Uganda, Ethiopia, and Rwanda.
Scientific awards: Recipient of University of Sussex Teaching Excellence Award (2014-15). Her publications focus on literacy interventions, teacher training in low-income countries, and conflict-sensitive education.
Teaching: Convenor of undergraduate module 'Access, Equity & Gender' and MA module 'Developing Literacies in a Global Context'. She also teaches qualitative data analysis.
