Professor Jo Slater-Jefferies is CEO of the National Biofilms Innovation Centre (NBIC) and Associate Dean of Enterprise at the University of Southampton's Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences. She holds a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Portsmouth, an MBA, and Chartered Manager status. Her research focuses on microbial biofilms across health, food, agriculture, and industrial sectors. NBIC, with 63 university partners and 150+ industry collaborators, addresses biofilm-related challenges through prevention, detection, management, and engineering strategies.
Her work includes global partnerships with institutions like Singapore's SCELSE and Argentina's research centers to advance biofilm applications. She contributed to SARS-CoV-2 saliva testing innovations during the pandemic, demonstrating RT-LAMP technology's diagnostic accuracy. Her interdisciplinary approach spans microbiology, engineering, and economics to tackle $4tn biofilm-related challenges globally.
Key grants include collaborations with the Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and strategic initiatives in sustainable agriculture and AMR policy. As AAIR charity Director/Trustee, she bridges academic research with public health impact. Her leadership spans roles at Sciona Ltd and EpiGen, a global research consortium.
