Professor Daniel Ashton is Professor of Cultural and Creative Industries at the University of Southampton's Winchester School of Art, where he leads research on cultural organizations, creative work, and digital media technologies. With extensive experience in programme leadership at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, he coordinates the MA in Arts and Cultural Leadership and supervises PhD candidates. His interdisciplinary research spans cultural policy, digital transformations, and creative labor.
Research focuses on three key areas: work in the creative economy examining policy contexts and technological impacts; data practices in cultural placemaking and decision-making; and arts/cultural organizations including funding models and audience engagement. Recent projects include Creative Futures Exchange (international creative education partnerships) and Diverse Capacities (local government-creative industry networks).
Publications demonstrate consistent focus on cultural work transformations, particularly regarding AI's impact on creative practices and policy frameworks. Awards recognize excellence in knowledge exchange and teaching innovation, including a 2018 teaching award for Global Media Management programme leadership.
