Matthew Durey is a Senior Lecturer in Social Sciences and Vice-Chancellor’s Research and Knowledge Exchange Fellow at the University of Sunderland. He joined in 2018 as a Lecturer, previously holding roles at Northumbria University. As Programme Leader for MSc Inequality and Society, he teaches social theory, research methods, and dissertation supervision across undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
His research focuses on post-industrial urban transformations, cultural and creative industries, and the sociological significance of art. Current projects include a VC-funded study on Sunderland’s cultural regeneration and a UKRI-supported project on community-led urban sustainability practices. He employs mixed-methods including visual ethnography and spatial analysis.
Dr. Durey’s work bridges urban geography and sociology, examining themes like moral economy, cultural policy, and everyday geographies. He actively collaborates with Sunderland’s cultural organizations and public sectors, emphasizing participatory approaches. His recent publications address urban regeneration, academic discipline dynamics, and gendered safety in urban spaces.
