Adelle Hulsmeier is an Associate Professor of Partnerships and Participatory Practice at the University of Sunderland, leading the BA (Hons) Screen Performance programme. She holds roles as Global Partnership Lead for Greece and Cyprus, External Examiner for multiple institutions, and Senior Fellow of Advance HE. Her work focuses on embedding social change through collaborative learning and participatory action research, with a strong emphasis on curricula innovation and industry collaboration.
Education includes a PhD in Shakespeare (2019), MA from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, and BA from the University of Hull. She is a qualified teacher (QTLS, 2011) and completed Advanced HE's Aurora Programme for leadership development in 2022.
Research spans three core areas: employability via academic/industry partnerships, participatory theatre for social change, and Shakespeare in applied contexts. Notable projects include:
- XR Media and Police Education (AHRC-funded, 2025-2026)
- Local Theatres Study (UKRI-funded, 2024-2025)
- 50+ films produced with Northumbria Police addressing serious crime awareness
Awards include the National Teaching Fellowship (2020) and Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (2019). She supervises PhD candidates exploring social impact through media and institutional history.
Labs/Teams: Leads collaborations with Live Theatre Newcastle, Northumbria Police, and National Theatre’s Public Acts initiative. Active in networks like DisCrim (Vulnerability and Criminal Justice) and SCUDD (Standing Conference for Drama Departments).
