Dr Henry Bell is a Senior Lecturer at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS), School of Business and Creative Industries. Previously, he held a Senior Lecturer position at Sheffield Hallam University (2016–2021) and worked in professional theatre directing and applied theatre practice. He completed a practice-based PhD at Hull University (2016) on in-the-round Shakespeare performance reception among schoolchildren. His expertise includes Theatre-in-the-round, Early Modern Drama, Digital Pedagogy, and anti-discrimination methodologies.
- Education: PhD (Hull University, 2016), MA Staging Shakespeare (Exeter University), BA Drama (Hull University).
- Research Focus: Inter-cultural Shakespeare pedagogy, Digital Early Modern Performance, Theatre-in-the-round history, and creative anti-discrimination practices. Co-founded the De-Centred Shakespeares Network with global collaborators.
His work integrates academic research with professional theatre experience, such as co-authoring The Theatre of Laura Wade (2026) and developing YTT Performance Methodology for refugee engagement. External roles include External Examiner at the University of Leeds (2023–2026) and University of Essex (2019–2023).
- Grants and Collaborations: Partnered with War Childhood Museum (Sarajevo), Act for Change, and Sanaak Shakesepare Naatak Company. Developed anti-discrimination training with Dr Sunita Toor for Indian police.
- Teaching: Modules include Practice: Text-Based, Cross Media Collaboration, and Creative Research Project.
Key projects include Pericles on the Sea (multi-continent digital performance) and Lockdown Shakespeares (transnational workshop series).
