Dr. Diane Conrad is a Professor in the Department of Secondary Education within the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta. She specializes in Drama/Theatre Education, Applied Theatre, and Arts-based Research, with a focus on marginalized youth populations including incarcerated youth and Indigenous learners. Her work emphasizes participatory methodologies and community engagement. She directs the Canada Foundation for Innovation-funded Arts-based Research Studio, a facility dedicated to innovative research dissemination.
Dr. Conrad holds a PhD and MEd from the University of Alberta, alongside degrees in Education and Fine Arts. Her career includes teaching in Lesotho and the Northwest Territories before joining the University of Alberta faculty in 2004. She teaches graduate courses in curriculum studies, arts-based research, and participatory research methods.
Her research explores youth justice advocacy, decolonizing educational practices, and participatory arts-based methodologies. Key projects include SSHRC-funded studies on incarcerated youth and Indigenous education partnerships. Recent publications include Education and Social Innovation: The Youth Uncensored Project and Educational Fabulations: Teaching and Learning for a World Yet to Come.
Awards: 2006 SSHRC Aurora Prize for transformative drama research with incarcerated youth.
Dr. Conrad advises graduate students interested in drama education, applied theatre, and participatory research. She has collaborated with organizations like iHuman Youth Society and First Nations schools through funded initiatives. Her teaching spans undergraduate drama pedagogy and doctoral research seminars.
