Dr João Alencastro serves as Lecturer and Programme Lead in the Built Environment department at the School of Art, Design and Architecture, University of Plymouth, teaching BSc Architectural Engineering, Construction Project Management, Quantity Surveying, and Building Surveying programmes. Previously, he lectured at Brazil's Federal University of Santa Catarina and UNIVALI.
Trained as an Architect and Urban Planner, he holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management, Master's in Construction Project Management, and PhD in Construction and Quality Management. His research examines how project and quality management practices impact building energy performance, integrating construction technology to advance sustainable built environments aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals.

With 20+ years as a design coordinator and project manager in construction, he incorporates industry expertise into teaching through authentic learning activities and industry partnerships. He supervises undergraduate dissertations and PhD students while leading modules including Contract Procedures, Construction Project Management Processes, and Built Environment Project series. His work bridges academic research with practical industry applications to enhance sustainable construction practices.
