Jisan Afrin is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Crime, Justice and Policing (CCJP), Department of Economics, Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham. She joined in August 2024 and is based at the Institute for Global Innovation, UK.

Jisan is a development economist whose research centers on gender, inequality, domestic violence, and social wellbeing. Her doctoral work explored women’s empowerment in Bangladesh through access to education and employment, employing economic and gender theories such as agency theory and inter-household bargaining. She investigates how socio-economic resources reshape power dynamics and gender relations within patriarchal households.
Her professional experience spans over three years in the UK higher education sector (University of Liverpool, University of Reading, UWE Bristol) and three years in the development sector in Bangladesh, working with major institutions including DFID, IFAD, and the World Bank.

Jisan has previously held research and teaching roles across multiple UK universities and brings interdisciplinary expertise in policy and development. She is actively contributing to research on crime, justice, and policing through a socio-economic and gendered lens.
