Jinming Zhao, PhD, is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at the University of Pittsburgh. His research focuses on airway epithelium physiology and cell biology in respiratory diseases, with a specialized emphasis on asthma pathogenesis involving Th2 cytokines, 15-lipoxygenase 1 (15LO1), autophagy, and ferroptosis. His foundational discovery of 15LO1/PEBP1 interactions has opened novel therapeutic avenues for inflammatory diseases.
Education:
- PhD, Fudan University, Shanghai, China (2003)
Research Focus: Dr. Zhao investigates molecular mechanisms underlying asthma, including lipid mediator pathways (e.g., 15LO1-generated oxylipins), ferroptosis-regulated cell death, autophagy dynamics, and epithelial cell responses to cytokines (IL-13, IL-22) and environmental stressors (cigarette smoke, viruses). His work integrates biochemical, imaging, and molecular techniques to elucidate signaling pathways in airway epithelium.
Publication Trends: Recent articles (2017–2022) demonstrate a consistent focus on 15LO1/PEBP1 interactions regulating ferroptosis-autophagy balance, redox homeostasis, and type-2 inflammation in asthma. Earlier work (2007–2015) established key links between lipoxygenase pathways, mucus regulation, receptor desensitization, and environmental triggers in airway disease.
