Jing Fang is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Linguistics at Macquarie University. She is a NAATI (National Accreditation Authority of Translators and Interpreters) certified translator and interpreter between English and Chinese, serving as a panel interpreter/translator for Multicultural NSW. She is also a NAATI examiner with active involvement in NAATI's examination development and assessment, and serves on the NAATI Regional Advisory Committee in NSW as a representative of the higher education sector.
Her research interests focus on translation and interpreting studies, with expertise in several specialized areas:
- Systemic functional linguistics applied to translation research
- Text analysis for translation and interpreting studies
- Process-based translation and interpreting research
- Translation studies using functional linguistics and eye-tracking methodologies
- Corpus-based translation studies
- Sight translation research between Chinese and English
- Studies of remote interpreting
- Medical translation, particularly Traditional Chinese Medicine texts
Jing Fang's recent publications demonstrate a strong trajectory in analyzing directionality in interpreting, sight translation between Chinese and English, and the role of domain expertise in medical translation. Her work combines theoretical frameworks from systemic functional linguistics with empirical methodologies including eye-tracking technology. She has increasingly focused on the cognitive and textual aspects of translation processes, particularly examining how expertise affects translation quality and texture.
Her notable scientific achievement includes the FMHHS Education Excellence Award (2025), recognizing her contributions to teaching and student experience.
Jing Fang is actively involved in supervising HDR students, with both current and past supervisees working on diverse topics related to translation studies. She is recruiting new PhD candidates for 2025 in her areas of research expertise. Additionally, she is a member of the Multilingualism Research Centre at Macquarie University and maintains external positions with NAATI as both an examiner and Regional Advisory Committee Member.
