Jan-Louis Kruger is a Professor in the Department of Linguistics at Macquarie University, affiliated with the Centre for Reading Lifespan Health and Wellbeing Research Centre and the Performance and Expertise Research Centre. His research focuses on eye tracking, cognitive translation studies, and audiovisual translation (AVT), exploring how subtitles and other multimodal elements affect cognitive load and comprehension.
Education: PhD in English (2002), MA (1993), and BA (1990) from Potchefstroom University, with additional qualifications in Education and Higher Education.
Research interests include subtitle processing, multilingualism, and translator expertise. He has supervised numerous PhD and MRes students in translation studies and cognitive methodologies. Key projects involve improving healthcare accessibility through interpreter services and analyzing digital reading patterns.
Recent articles highlight studies on advertising disruption in reading, eye tracking in interpreting, and subtitle speed effects. Collaborations span universities globally, addressing translational challenges in health and education.
He advises on over 30 student projects and leads initiatives like the Mobile Eyetracking Laboratory. His work bridges cognitive science and applied linguistics to enhance communication accessibility.
