Jan Pedersen is an Associate Professor in Translation Studies at Stockholm University's Department of Swedish Language and Multilingualism, affiliated with the SPRINT research group. He previously served as Director of the Board of the Institute for Interpreting and Translation Studies and former President of ESIST. His primary research focuses on audiovisual translation, particularly subtitling norms, cultural transfer, and the impact of machine translation. Pedersen co-edits the Journal of Audiovisual Translation and has contributed to guidelines for media accessibility and subtitling quality assessment (e.g., the FAR Model). His teaching spans audiovisual translation, translation theory, and linguistics, with supervision across all academic levels.
Research interests include fansubbing, transcultural metaphors, and media accessibility via respeaking technology. Notable projects involve Scandinavian subtitling norms, visualization of metaphors in subtitles, and Swedish fansubbing analysis. Pedersen’s work bridges descriptive translation studies and cognitive approaches, emphasizing translational decision-making under media constraints.
Publications span 20+ years, addressing subtitling strategies, cultural references, and technological shifts (e.g., Netflix’s influence). He collaborates internationally, contributing to Benjamins Translation Library’s editorial board and presenting at conferences like TIC. Current projects explore speech recognition for hearing-impaired students and the evolving role of subtitlers in the machine translation era.
Teaching responsibilities include leading Stockholm University’s translation and interpreting master’s programs. His pedagogical reforms focus on adapting curricula to digital media trends and professional AVT demands.
