Jill Vaughan is a Senior Lecturer in Linguistics at Monash University, Australia, affiliated with the School of Philosophical, Historical and International Studies. Her research focuses on the sociolinguistics of multilingualism, Indigenous languages, and language in education.
Her research interests include:
- Sociolinguistics of multilingualism and language variation
- Indigenous and Aboriginal Australian languages
- Heritage languages, especially Celtic languages
- Language ideologies and identity
- Language documentation and ethical research
- Linguistics outreach and education
Her recent publications reflect a strong focus on multilingualism in Indigenous communities, language documentation in Arnhem Land, and public engagement through linguistics education. Themes across her work include ethical collaboration, community-led research, and making linguistics accessible.
She has been recognized with the Talkley Award in 2016 for public outreach. Her research is supported by grants from the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the Arcadia Fund.
Jill Vaughan actively supervises PhD students and contributes to public discourse through media articles in The Conversation and collaborations with schools and Indigenous institutions. She co-founded the award-winning Linguistics Roadshow, which brings linguistics to high school students across Australia.
Her current projects include 'Where Gesture Meets Grammar' (ARC-funded) and 'Showing Stories: Ancestral Narratives in Arnhem Land Art' (Arcadia Fund), reflecting her interdisciplinary and community-engaged approach.
