Jill Rubery is a Professor at Alliance Manchester Business School, University of Manchester, where she has worked since 1989, initially at the Manchester School of Management at UMIST and then in Alliance Manchester Business School since 2004. She previously worked at the Department of Applied Economics at Cambridge University. Currently, she serves as the Director of the Work and Equalities Institute at Alliance Manchester Business School. Her leadership roles have included Deputy Director of Alliance Manchester Business School (2007-2013) and head of the People, Management and Organisation Division (2004-2009).
Her research focuses on comparative employment systems with particular emphasis on gender. Key areas include labor market regulation policies, minimum wages, new forms of work and flexibility, women's employment and women's pay, employers' working-time policies, and international comparative employment systems. She founded the European Work and Employment Centre in 1994, which evolved into the current Work and Equalities Institute that she directs. Her work has been funded by major organizations including ESRC, Equal Opportunities Commission, Leverhulme Trust, ILO, and European Commission.
Professor Rubery's recent publications demonstrate continued engagement with pressing labor market issues including pandemic impacts on front-line workers, precarious work arrangements, digitalization effects on employment, and healthcare workforce dynamics. These works reflect her longstanding commitment to understanding how employment systems affect different worker groups, particularly with regard to gender equality.

Professor Rubery has supervised 15 research students and has been involved in numerous research projects. Her work has influenced European employment policy, working time regulations, and efforts to promote inclusive labor markets internationally.
As Director of the Work and Equalities Institute, she leads a significant research center focused on employment and equality issues, continuing her decades-long contribution to labor market research and policy development.
