Jianan Chen is a Doctoral Research Fellow at the CREATE Center for Research on Equality in Education, University of Oslo. Their research focuses on test design for progressive assessments, aberrant response patterns in large-scale surveys, and psychometric methodologies. Chen holds a Master in Measurement, Assessment and Evaluation (University of Oslo, 2023), a European Master in Health Economics and Management (Erasmus University Rotterdam & University of Oslo, 2020), and a Bachelor in Public Health Administration (Fudan University, 2017).
Key research areas include improving screening tools for learning difficulties, analyzing response inconsistencies in mixed-worded scales, and applying item response theory to educational measurements. Current projects involve developing transparent stopping rules for progressive tests and exploring adaptive screening for language skills (SEALS project). Chen is affiliated with the Frontier Research in Educational Measurement (FREMO) group.
Publications emphasize methodological contributions to survey design, including analyses of random responding in TIMSS data and cognitive/personality factors influencing self-report inconsistencies. Their work bridges educational measurement theory with practical applications in large-scale assessments.
