Jian Neo Chen is an Associate Professor of queer studies in the Department of Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies at The Ohio State University. They hold affiliate faculty status in the English department and Film Studies program. Previously served as director of Asian American Studies (2020) and Sexuality Studies (2017-2018). Holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from UC Irvine and BA in Ethnic Studies and English from UC Berkeley.
Research focuses on trans, Two-Spirit, and gender-expansive expression across literature, visual arts, science cultures, and theory. Their 2019 book Trans Exploits explores trans of color cultural production and activism, winning the 2021 AAAS Book Award. Current projects include studies on trans auto-writing and trans/Pacific epistemologies.
Serves as co-editor of Duke University Press' ASTERISK series and steering committee member of Mellon-funded TEN:TACLES initiative. Former editorial board member of Transgender Studies Quarterly. Organized numerous academic and public events to build trans networks across sectors.
