Ren-yo Hwang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Gender Studies and Department of Critical Race and Political Economy at Mount Holyoke College. They are currently on leave for the 2025-2026 academic year, with interdisciplinary scholarship bridging gender studies, critical race theory, and political economy through queer and transgender of color critique.

Hwang's research critically analyzes carceral technologies of control, state partnerships in anti-violence reform, and violence identification discourses. Their first monograph examines hate crimes policy and community policing against queer and transgender of color survivor practices in Los Angeles across three decades (1980s-2010s), with publications in Transgender Studies Quarterly and Critical Ethnic Studies Journal.
