JiYoung Park

JiYoung Park is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the School of Architecture and Planning, University at Buffalo. His research focuses on urban economics, transportation modeling, and their application to natural/man-made disasters. He developed the National Interstate Economic Model (NIEMO), used to assess economic impacts of disasters like Hurricane Katrina and cyberattacks. Dr. Park holds a PhD in Urban Planning from the University of Southern California, and MA and BA in Economics from Seoul National University.

His work expands NIEMO to incorporate multi-modal systems, international extensions, and environmental modeling, aiming to predict urban-regional dynamics for planners. Key research areas include disaster resilience, cybersecurity economics, and policy implications for international trade corridors. He serves on the editorial board of International Journal of Urban Sciences, advises national committees in South Korea, and contributes to organizations like MCEER and NARSC.

Recent research explores pandemic economics (e.g., Korean responses to COVID-19), infrastructure resilience (earthquake impacts on LA's freight systems), and cross-border innovation in industrial corridors. His publications span 20+ years with a focus on quantitative regional modeling and policy analysis.

Professional activities include advising South Korea's National Science and Technology committees, co-editing special journal issues, and proposing risk modeling frameworks for urban planning. He actively engages in international collaborations, bridging academic research with practical policy applications in disaster management and economic development.
