Jette Lengefeld is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki, leading the Blood Stem cells during health and disease research group and serving as Supervisor in the Doctoral Programme in Integrative Life Science.
Her research investigates stem cell aging mechanisms, focusing on cell size regulation as a determinant of stem cell potential during aging. Work establishes cellular enlargement as a new hallmark of aging, with implications for cancer and regenerative medicine through molecular analysis of cytoplasm dilution, senescence, and asymmetric cell division.
Recent publications (2018-2023) reveal consistent trends: cell size directly impacts stem cell functionality in aging, utilizing advanced live-cell imaging and computational modeling to uncover fundamental pathways in hematopoietic systems.
Scientific recognition includes:
- FEBS Excellence Award (2025-2027, €100,000)
Current funding supports critical aging research:
- Lengefeld Cancer Foundation grant (2025, €40,000)
- Academy of Finland project: Inverkan av storleksskalning på transport mellan organ i stamceller (2024-2028)
- Academy of Finland project: Solun koon merkitys kantasolujen toiminalle (2024-2026)
- ERC project: Cell size as driver of stem cell aging (2024-2028)
Her laboratory utilizes BD Fortessa, BD Aria II, and BD Fusion flow cytometers for stem cell analysis, with media coverage including Solving the Mystery of how Stem cells age (2021) and Cellular enlargement - A new Hallmark of aging? (2022).
