Jessica Chen Weiss is the David M. Lampton Professor of China Studies and inaugural director of the Institute for America, China, and the Future of Global Affairs (ACF) at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, D.C. Formerly, she held the Michael J. Zak Professorship at Cornell University's Department of Government and was an assistant professor at Yale University. She served as a senior advisor to the U.S. Department of State’s Policy Planning Staff (2021–2022) through a Council on Foreign Relations fellowship.
Her research focuses on Chinese foreign policy, domestic politics, nationalism, and U.S.-China relations. Notable works include Powerful Patriots (2014), analyzing nationalist protests in China's foreign relations, and her upcoming book A World Safe for Autocracy? examining how domestic politics shape China's foreign policy ambitions. Weiss critiques zero-sum approaches to U.S.-China competition, advocating strategic reassurance and cooperative frameworks.
Her commentary frequently appears in Foreign Affairs, New York Times, and Washington Post, and she has testified before Congress on U.S.-China relations. Awards include the APSA Best Dissertation Award (2010) and recognition as a Prospect Magazine Top Thinker (2024). She directs the ACF institute, fostering research on global governance and U.S.-China dynamics.
